This is a half-day, beginner friendly workshop where participants will learn to do relief work on clay tiles. "Relief work" is a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material. In relief, the figures or designs are raised above the background surface to varying degrees, creating a three-dimensional effect while still being part of a two-dimensional surface. The tiles will be then glazed and fired by the studio and can be taken home by participants within 14-21 days of the workshop.
What you will learn / take-away:
- Introduction to clay: understanding of the mechanics involved in working with clay.
-
Introduction to hand-building & sculpting techniques
- Learning how to make a slab of clay
- Creating 3D relief tiles from 2D image references
- The essentials of relief carving on clay tiles
- Techniques to add depth and dimension to your designs
